Suicidal Tendencies is an American hardcore punk band ( later thrash metal) formed in 1982 in Venice, California. Sometimes regarded as the progenitors of skate punk, they later incorporated significant heavy metal and thrash elements. The group, led by Mike Muir ('Cyco Miko'), had a rough start that included being voted 'Worst Band/Biggest Assholes' in Flipside in 1982. Using the opposition to fuel creativity, they quickly gained a following, performing larger and larger gigs. As the size grew, so did the rumors of gang relations and violence (eventually leading to a Los Angeles ban on public performances by Suicidal Tendencies). The band signed with the indie label Frontier Records and issued their classic self-titled debut in 1983.
The album was the best-selling hardcore album up to that point. It included many memorable songs. The video for Institutionalized was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on.
Suicidal Tendencies - Lights.Camera.Revolution! Is the fourth studio album by thrash metal/hardcore punk band Suicidal Tendencies. Suicidal Tendencies is a band I've known about for quite a few years now, but for whatever reason never checked them out until this year. While I have listened to quite a few of their albums since finally checking them out, none of the albums I heard I find to be as great and solid as their fourth offering right here. One thing I love about Suicidal Tendencies and some other thrash acts such as Anthrax, are their sense of humor. It's difficult for me to not laugh a bit when listening to songs like 'Lovely' with lyrics like: 'Screwed up people everywhere, but I ain't got time to care. I feel lovely, lovely.Ha!
La la lovely, oh-oh.' Not only are the lyrics funny, but the mix of thrashing guitar and the funky bassline make this a real treat. The song 'Send Me Your Money', while having a good message, is pretty funny just hearing vocalist Mike Muir singing 'Send me your money' with his unique voice.
Speaking of 'Send Me Your Money', the song starts out with a very catchy bassline before the catchy hop of the guitar enters in. Like with 'Lovely', this song has some pretty catchy bass throughout. My favorite song on the album though is the song 'Lost Again', which is pure thrash goodness.
It's crunching guitar and Muir's punk-y vocals fit perfect. The end of the song changes, with a bit more of a jumpy beat. Muir has a very unique voice, fitting very well with the pulsating guitar. His voice has a punk-y edge to it, but I suppose you could also compare him to a more melodic Dave Mustaine tone. It's honestly hard to explain how is voice sounds, he certainly has one of the most unique voices I've heard. Overall, if you want some fun thrash metal, this is a perfect album to satisfy that need. Hope you found this review helpful.
Feel free to comment! 'How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today' is the 3rd full-length studio album by US thrash metal act Suicidal Tendencies. The album was released through Epic Records in September 1988.
'How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today' marks the beginning of the band´s most commercially successful period helped along by the change of label from the small Caroline Records to the major label Epic Records. The music on the album is a further step in a thrashy direction compared to the predecessor 'Join the Army (1987)'. Still the band won´t fully let go of their crossover/hardcore roots and they pop up now and again.
The quality is generally high on the album but to my ears it´s especially the opening trio of tracks 'Trip at the Brain', 'Hearing Voices' and 'Pledge Your Allegiance' plus the great title track that stand strongest in memory. Some of the material on the latter part of the album are not as memorable albeit still enjoyable. The musicianship is solid and the sound production professional and suits the music well. It was already obvious on the last album how great a guitarist Rocky George is, but here he really gets to show all his skills. The album is loaded with blistering guitar solos courtesy of George.
The vocals by Mike Muir is as always an aquired taste, but I think most people can agree that he has one of the most distinct sounding and easily recognisable singing styles in metal. Had all tracks been of the high quality of the first four tracks on the album, 'How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today' would have deserved a full 4 star (80%) rating, but as I think the quality drops slightly the longer you get into the album a 3.5 star (70%) rating will do. '13' is the 10th (if you count 'Still Cyco After All These Years (1993)') full-length studio album by US crossover/thrash metal act Suicidal Tendencies. '13' was released through Suicidal Records in March 2013. It´s the first album by the group since 'Free Your Soul. And Save My Mind' from 2000.
A comeback long overdue if you ask me. The only remaining member of the lineup that recorded the predecessor, besides lead vocalist/only original member Mike Muir, is lead guitarist Dean Pleasants.that doesn´t affect how the music sounds though, as this is unmistakably the sound of Suicidal Tendencies. A 'light' thrashy crossover hardcore style with occasional funky basslines/rythms and Mike Muir´s distinct sounding vocal style on top. Not much have changed. The music on '13' sounds closer to the more hardcore/punked sound of the two predecessors than it does to the more thrashy sound of the late eighties/early nineties releases by the band. The period that most fans probably consider the band´s prime. That doesn´t however make '13' a bad album if you remember to adjust your expectations.
'13' opens with what I think is one of the highlights of the album in 'Shake It Out', which is an incredibly catchy track and probably the track on the album that reminds me the most of 'vintage' Suicidal Tendencies. While I don´t think the band quite reach the heights of 'Shake It Out' again, during the 58:13 minutes long playing time, the rest of the tracks on the album are entertaining too (just check the badass attitude of tracks like 'This Ain´t a Celebration' or 'Who´s Afraid?' And try not to smile and say 'hell yeah') and the quality is generally high. The band are very well playing and the sound production is professional and powerful too. So while '13' could overall have been a slightly more effectful comeback, it´s still a damn solid effort by the band, and they certainly prove why their presence on the scene is still fully justified.
A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved. The whole reason Suicidal Tendencies are interesting is because of their innovative crossbreeding of thrash metal and hardcore punk, which leaves their debut album feeling rather uninspiring.
It's a reasonable set of hardcore punk, but it's also a somewhat generic set - if you've heard any early-80s hardcore there are few surprises to be had here. A few moments like the intro to I Shot the Devil suggest something more but ultimately such features are only there to add spice to a fairly basic hardcore approach. They're no Black Flag at this point, but punk fans will find lyrics like 'I shot Reeeeeeeeeagan!' Suitably transgressive.
