I know you cannot upgrade directly to Windows Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit directly. My plan is to upgrade Windows Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 32-bit then to install Windows 7 as a 64-bit on a completely new drive. This may not sound logical but I want a fall-back to a good working version in the event some of my 'necessary' programs do not work properly under Windows 7 64-bit plus if I ever have a 'fatal' crash, I have a quick fallback until I get back up and running. From what I understand, I can bypass registering the 1st step Windows 7 32-bit upgrade for up to 30 days which gives me plenty of time to install the Windows 7 64-bit on a new drive and ensure everything is working prior to registering the Windows 7 64-bit as my legitimate version. This will not be a dual-boot as I plan to remove the drive with the upgraded Windows 7 32-bit and store as a fall-back.

I would be totally 'shocked' if installing Windows 64-bit on one drive (the new 1 TB drive) would write 'anything' on the 320 GB drive that would affect booting up the Windows 64-bit OS on the new drive when I take out the 320 GB drive and change the drive settings so the 1 TB is the main drive. If it does, it's the first time I have ever had to disconnect one drive with an operating system when I was installing another operating system on a completely different drive.
